History
Borrowed from someone else’s urbex site report as I couldn’t find a great deal of info from other sources: George Barnsley was apprenticed into the filemakers trade in 1823 by his mother, Anne, who had been widowed. He was signed in to the apprenticeship – to a Thomas Wing of Sheffield – for seven years and two hundred and seventy one days. He later went in to partnership with his brother and they established themselves as one of the worlds leading manufacturers of tools for the shoe making and leather trades. The company grew throughout the 19th century and the Barnsley family were held in high regard in the thriving city. Eventually the outdated factory and production methods fell victim to the increasingly competitive import market and the growing costs of production, finally closing in 2003. There are currently no solid plans set out for the site.
Out Visit
Second spot of the day, well technically the 4th or 5th but the 2nd in terms of a report as the others were either too secure or a waste of time :D. Ryan gets the credit for this one having looked it up on his mobile while we were driving around scouting other potential locations. Upon arrival we bumped into a couple of fellow explorers who were just making their exit and who kindly pointed us in the right direction in terms of access. Without going into too much detail I almost needed a change of underwear after getting inside on what must be one of the scariest entry points I’d ever had lol! Big shout out to the guys who mentioned it and to Ryan and Sam for having the balls to go first :D. Once inside we had a good look around and covered most of the place (Sam and Ryan probably saw every inch while I was busy taking photos). The place is quite well preserved and has a nice few bits to see, I’m glad we stopped off for a visit here and I’d probably go back if I could must up the courage 🙂 On with the photos:
