Urbex: Château Face Off, France – June 2016
Château Face Off was definitely one of my favourite explores of 2016. Smaller than I had anticipated, the Château was full of relics from the former occupants most notably three rather unusual bustes…

The abandoned Château Stromae is yet another architecturally stunning castle in France which sits abandoned in a deteriorating state. As you can see from the exterior photos this building has been added to over the years and has quite a history to it as well…
Another interesting disused Chateau in France, this building from what I understand is earmarked for restoration despite being in a pretty bad condition structurally.
An old abandoned Military Barracks somewhere in France. I believe the place is earmarked to be converted to housing, or at least the main building. Sadly this building was not accessible during our visit, however, I expect by the looks of the rest of the places it’s probably well stripped!
Quite likely my last visit to this Castle, for those who might not have already heard the castle is being demolished / dismantled and work began shortly after my visit last year.Plenty of photos have circulated showing the tops of the towers and turrets removed and laying on the ground as well as other clearance works on the grounds…
An old decaying Blue & Green chapel in some random little village in Wales, I often remember walking past this one when I was young and wondering what it would look like inside…
A small abandoned chapel in Wales, completely out of sight, barely occupying a small clearing in the tightly packed undergrowth this little chapel was in surprisingly good condition given that it clearly hadn’t been used for decades. The light was nice and subtle on the overcast day which made this one a joy to shoot!
Ceulan Mills is an old abandoned textile mill in Wales, one of 5 others in the town this was apparently one of the first which generated electricity for some of the houses within the village making it one of the first locally to have power. The Mill is believed to have been built on the in 1850’s and closed in the 1960’s after attempts to diversify and sell directly to the public failed to generate sufficient revenue.
Not a great deal to say about this one, an old abandoned textile mill which has been closed for decades. Powered from an old water wheel the mill contains lots of old machinery and lots of coloured wool.
Now, I’m pretty sure that contrary to the name of this place… The Doll didn’t actually own the house… nor was it an actual Dolls House. This small stone built farmhouse sits isolated, a small walk from a country road surrounded by empty fields. Clearly disused for decades the place was starting to fall apart but…
The currently empty Tottenham House is a large Grade 1 listed building in the United Kingdom which has sat disused for some time. In 2014 the property sold to a multi-millionaire property developer after a long battle between the trustee and the Earl of Cardigan who were the previous joint owners.
Originally mothballed in 2010 after the loss of a large contract the Blast Furnace was relit in 2012 after new owners stepped in to restart production. However, the new owners fell into liquidation in October 2015 prompting the closure of the site once again. Parts of the site still remain in use but a lot of the production within this area has ceased with the loss of thousands of jobs.
Holly Lodge Girls’ College was an abandoned building formerly used as a school for female students until they upgraded to new premises. The old buildings were disused for several years and briefly functioned as a film set for both hospital and police station scenes as evidenced with some of the set designs..
The now abandoned Kelling Colliery was the last functioning Deep Coal Mine in the United Kingdom and marked is last day on 18th December 2015. Bore holes were first drilled on the site in the 1950’s in order to establish the feasibility of constructing the mine. The sinking of the mine’s two shafts began in 1960 which ultimately reached an initial depth of 800m…
Built in 1902 the now disused Theatre Royale located on Corporation Street, Hyde, Manchester has a nicely preserved auditorium and an excellent projection booth full of 3 large projectors.
The abandoned Forum Cinema which was primarily owned and operated by ABC Cinemas, first opened in the 1930’s and was known to be one of the finest “super cinemas” of the era…
The abandoned Château Martin du Pecheur. We stopped off at this place during our trip having seen a few older reports, disappointing the few bits of contents that did remain were now gone and the Château was pretty much empty.
Château Secession, maybe 2016’s busiest location…
The now abandoned Wavertree Memorial Church aka Protestant Martyrs Memorial Church in Liverpool was founded in 1903 and closed in 2004…
Built in 1831 and later expanded in 1902 the Former Huddersfield Infirmary which later became Kirklees Colledge now lays abandoned in its central location…
Broughton Printers Ltd was originally founded in 1988 and later acquired by Northern & Shell as part of its purchase of the Express Newspapers in 2001. The printers, at its peak, employed 200 staff across the 15,805 m2 site and produced around 11 million newspapers and magazines each day…
The now abandoned Queen Elizabeth II Hospital was the first major hospital built by the NHS and accommodated 100 patients. in 2015 A new hospital opened on the same site after a £30 million investment in modern services. The old site was closed and earmarked for demolition to make way for a new housing development…
Yet another visit to London and back to a rooftop I had done before but last time it was a day time trip. Needless to say, I was happy to get back and see this one again after dark as the views really don’t disappoint…
Briefly, this huge Naval Hospital was built on the south coast of England in 1753 and closed its doors in 2009 after more than 250 years of service…
Another visit to the not so white morgue… I heard it was open again and had nothing more productive to do on my birthday so I popped up to have a couple of beers and grab a few more shots of this lovely porcelain slab!
