Briefly\u00a0Severalls Lunatic Asylum aka The Second Essex County Asylum aka Severalls Hospital was built in 1910 and opened in 1913. At its peak the Asylum could house 2000 patients making it one of the largest in the country. Based upon the Echelon Asylum Plan Severalls has become well known for its spiralling Corridors which connect various buildings and the vast amount of bay windows within the wards.<\/p>\n<p>Controversial\u00a0psychiatric experiments \/ treatments were known to have taken place at Severalls including electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) along with the use of frontal lobotomies. These sorts of treatments peaked in the 1950\u2032s and reforms in the 1960\u2032s saw the abolition of this sort of practice in favour of art and musical therapy as well as widespread use of drugs and medication.<\/p>\n<p>The hospital began its closure process in the early 1990\u2032s along with many of the other large asylums in the country and a small portion remained open until 1997 to cater for continued treatment of some of the older patients.<\/p>\n<p>Recent news suggests that the days are numbered for this site. Significant works are underway at the rear of the site where a new road link is being built and rumours suggest the asylum itself will be demolished before the year is out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Visit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visited this time with Mule, Lowri, AndyK,\u00a0Kriegaffe9, Pete and Sonyes for a great day out and probably one of the last time i&#8217;ll see this fine example of an Asylum. Favourites as always are the connecting corridors and the cell corridors, I spent less time in the squirrels boutique this time but I did revisit the morgue.
