The now abandoned Kelling Colliery was the last functioning Deep Coal Mine in the United Kingdom and marked is last day on 18th December 2015. Bore holes were first drilled on the site in the 1950’s in order to establish the feasibility of constructing the mine. The sinking of the mine’s two shafts began in 1960 which ultimately reached an initial depth of 800m. Production of coal commenced in April 1965 and continued until its recent closure. Around 2000 men were employed at the site at any one time, the majority, being relocated from Scotland after the closure of many of the pits in the 1960’s.<\/p>\n

Just a flying visit here so not many photos! I did manage to get a shot of the shaft which had recently been capped off with concrete solidifying the closure of the mine. Enjoy the shots:<\/p>\n
