History<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

The Preventorium Dolhain is a fantastic art deco style building situated near the river Weser in the quiet secluded area of Dolhain near Liege. The Preventorium was built to accommodate Children who were infected with or presumed to be infected with tuberculosis and continued to act as a sanatorium until the mid 1980’s. Preventorium’s differed slightly from sanatoriums in that they catered more specifically to patients with an early state of infection. Work on the building started in the 1950’s and completion is recorded in 1955 when the hospital was in full\u00a0operation. \u00a0The building had a brief history closing only 30 years later when it became\u00a0uneconomical\u00a0to maintain the 150 bed capacity preventorium.<\/p>\n

Following the closure of the hospital the property was\u00a0transferred\u00a0back to ownership of the province of Liege before ultimately being sold to a businessman Kurt Mayer for a reported 10.6 million\u00a0Belgium\u00a0francs (approximately \u00a3230,000 with plans that the hospital would stripped out and converted into high end loft apartments.<\/p>\n

Our Visit<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n

Visited with Reliable Ryan ‘intrepidus’ and our soon to be Belgian commando and tour guide Christophe. Most of this place has been completely stripped out as you can see from the photographs. A quick google search has shown that not too long ago only 3-5 years or so there were much more artefacts left behind from the past, however most of these have now gone leaving only the beautiful and unusual features of the building behind. There are some really nice wrought iron staircase features and the huge opaque tinted glass windows at the front. \u00a0But the fire engine parked outside the front of the building is a draw in itself.\u00a0Definitely\u00a0more impressive from the outside but still worth a visit if you’re in\u00a0Belgium.<\/p>\n
