National Gas Turbine Establishment Pyestock Air House Cooling Towers

History

Some of you may be familiar with some of the history surrounding the mammoth site that was the National Gas Turbine Establishment Pyestock near Fleet. If not be sure to check out my first report for a bit more detail about the whole site and loads more photos before the demolition First visit in January 2013. There isn’t much of the site left these days and one of the few remaining parts which was the focus of our visit were the Air House Cooling Towers. The towers were built in 1961 and finally decommissioned in 2002. The Cooling towers were located at the south of the air house and were responsible for dealing with capacity of 1,250,000 gallons of softened water which was required for the air house.

Our Visit

Visited with Andy K of Behind Closed Doors Urban Exploration and the Mule! After another explore not too far away we decided to have a look at what was left at the old Pyestock site… As soon as we made it inside the perimeter fences two things became obvious, first, there really wasn’t much left on the site not only had most of the buildings been demolished but the land on the whole had been flattened and a debris cleared! The second thing we noticed was that Security were still patrolling and were still as keen as ever! We headed straight for the Air House Cooling Towers which were probably the tallest of the last remaining 2-3 buildings on site and from there we observed the random security routes and surveyed the site discussing what used to be located where etc… After spending an hour or so up the Cooling towers we decided to make our way over to what used to be Cell 3 and Cell 4 but are now simply 2 large holes in the ground. After navigating the Haras fence we then headed back out after saying goodbye to Pyestock for the last time…
