The History

The Vicar of Bramham, the Rev. Robert Bownas, built Bramham House in 1806. In 1814 it was sold and the new owner gave the house to his son as a wedding present, in 1856 it was again sold to clear up large debts. For the next 70 years it had numerous owners.

In 1947 West Riding County Council Children’s Department purchased the building and it was to become a family group home to accommodate neglected and homeless children, children from broken homes and experiencing ‘family problems and educational problems’ and those who had failed to respond to treatment for non school attendance within the community.

At its height it was home to 37 children of both sexes. The home closed in the early 1980’s and the children moved to another home in Wetherby that has since closed.

Our Visit

Ryan joined me for this spur of the moment explore bored and itching to get out in the nice weather we had a drive up to Bramham to check out this place where I had reccy’d the week prior. We made a new friend on our way in who shall remain nameless at his request (Ryan will be laughing at this!) and spent a couple of hours roaming about. I forgot to get a decent external shot so I shall post one I took on my phone last week. This place was surprisingly big inside, completely trashed as you can see on the photos but still an interesting visit. The basement was by far the best bit, I’d estimate it the full floor area of the building complete with boiler room kitchen and dining room. I got a light orb picture (I’ll never get bored of these so sorry if you aren’t a fan 😉 ). Roof access was cool and a nice little spot to take 5 mins in the sunshine! Loved the ceiling roses decorating the main office room ceiling featured above and in a couple of shots below.
