An abandoned Psychiatric Hospital somewhere in Scotland, well I say abandoned, most of it is but a small part remains in use… Visited with Stussy we arrived early and had a wander around this sizable old hospital which had a very asylum style layout to it….

The Asylum which was modelled on a German village-plan design similar to that of the Alt-Scherbitz asylum of the 1870s. Built in 1907 by Architect John Hamilton for the Eastwood Schoolboard the now abandoned Sir John-Maxwell School originally was built to accommodate 550 pupils of school age as well as opening in the evening for night classes. Birkwood Asylum dates from the 1860’s and closed in 2002. The most attractive of the buildings and the feature of this report is the old Birkwood House which was constructed in 1819 and was a stately home until the 1860’s when an additional wing was added and the Asylum established. Many additional buildings were added over the years within the grounds which are all now crumbling and falling apart while the old stone built stately home remains!

The Abandoned, or it would be more correct to say closed Loudoun Castle Theme Park is built on the site of the old Loudoun Castle which was originally contructed in the early 1800’s. The castle was destroyed in a devastating fire back in 1942.
